POSITION DESCRIPTION
It is the responsibility of every Shelter employee to uphold the mission and vision of our agency. The Shelter’s Mission is “To build a peaceful community by providing safety, educations and supportive services while empowering survivors and those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.” The Shelter will initiate programs that provide the individuals and families the skills to live safe, violence-free lives. Further, The Shelter will provide programs to educate the community about the effects of violence on families and individuals with the purpose of empowering them to help reduce and prevent family violence in our community. In addition, it is the expectation that all staff will communicate ethically and engage in providing excellent customer service. It is also an expectation that on the individual level all staff members will work to further their personal capacity to foster an environment of cultural inclusivity and sensitivity that is the foundation for all our work.
This description defines areas for which an individual has primary responsibility and is not intended to limit the scope of the job in any way.
The Primary responsibilities include:
Assist with assuring quality services to all survivors we serve and all community agencies that we collaborate with. Respond to hospital calls in the required time frame. Flexibility in schedule is a primary requirement (these hours are second shift with some on-call weekends and holidays)

Additional Duties Include:
- Provide assistance to the Sexual Assault Program Manager
- Respond to hospital calls requesting an advocate’s presence
- Work directly with survivors in providing on-going advocacy and support
- Work with First Responders including law enforcement, nurses, and other community agencies to ensure the best and appropriate services are provided
- Attend trainings related to sexual assault/domestic violence advocacy
- Assist with community awareness activities (presentations, displays, etc.)
- Complete documentation and other necessary paperwork
- Assist with Sexual Assault Awareness Month and other community events
- Provide resources and referrals
- Co-facilitate support groups
- Work with Shelter staff and Learn Shelter Policy and Procedure
- Attend Staff Meetings and Team Meetings
- Occasionally answer the crisis line and work within the Shelter to meet daily needs.
- Light cleaning duties
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Sexual Assault Services Advocate shall have the following qualifications:
- Minimum of an Associate’s Degree is highly preferred; work experienced may be considered in lieu of degree
- 1-year previous experience in the field of sexual assault/domestic violence preferred
- Must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license
- Must pass criminal background check and pre-employment drug testing
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and professional behavior
- Ability to work under pressure and react rationally in crisis situations
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to relate to persons of all backgrounds and ages
- Demonstrated strong written skills, ability to handle multiple tasks, and work collaboratively with allied professionals
- Knowledge of the laws and processes related to domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and stalking
- Knowledge of community resources and applicability to client needs.
